 Valentine Message Mobile

As early as the 1790's Valentine messages were exchanged and sometimes hidden in the folds of paper.  They were called "puzzle purses".  A piece of paper was folded into complicated designs and the message was revealed as the card was opened.

This fun paper mobile is our version of the valentine puzzles.  Your message can be hidden within the hanging folded hearts. A simple message of "I Love You",  or " How Do I Love Thee, Let Me Count The Ways",  can be expressed in a fun and unique way your kids can make.

This is what you need.

4 different pieces of craft paper.  We like different designs of red and pink.
a glue stick
clear fishing string
one metal ring.  We found a package of three at Michaels for about $2.

First cut out heart shapes.   You will need 4 heart shapes for each hanging heart.  We cut out 1 of each of the 4 paper designs.  This will make 1 hanging heart.  So depending on how many hanging hearts you want will determine how many heart shapes you will cut out.  Then fold each heart in half with the design on the inside.

Put glue on each side of the folded heart.

And glue one side of each heart to another.

Press the hearts together.
For the last two hearts you glue together,  cut a piece of the clear fishing line about the length you want to hang it plus a couple of inches for tying, and put it down the center of the hearts and then glue together.
Spread each of the hearts apart so that is it fanned out.
Tie fishing line criss crossed on top of the metal ring. You can hang the hearts from the metal ring or the criss crossed fishing line. Hang them at various lengths.  We also added a few small hearts in there for some variety.
To hang it, we tied some of the fishing line around the ring and brought it up, tied it together and hung it up.  It's a fun and simple craft that the kids can do and also share a valentines message hidden within the hearts!
